The insightful and often probing style of the interviewer, former politician John Freeman, separated it from other programmes of its genre at the time. Face to Face started a new style of interviewing. Guests were filmed in tight close-up of a face. Freeman's insightful and often probing personal questions made for riveting viewing and often caused a sensation.
