Citizen Kane is often said to be one of the most innovative works in the history of film. In 1997 the American Film Institute placed it at number one in its list of the 100 greatest U.S. movies of all time. In a recent poll of film critics and directors conducted by the British Film Institute, Citizen Kane was ranked the No.1 one best film of all time by both groups. In 1940 newspaper tycoon Charles Foster Kane (Orson Welles) dies after uttering the word 'Rosebud'. An anonymous reporter (William Alland) is assigned the task of finding the meaning of Kane's dying word, and in the course of his enquiries he receives varying accounts of his life from former colleagues Jedediah Leland (Joseph Cotten) and Bernstein (Everett Sloan), and ex-wife Susan Alexander (Dorothy Comingore). Welles produced, directed, co-wrote and starred in this, his ever first film, not-so-loosely based on the life of newspaper magnate William Randolph Hearst. Citizen Kane in this DVD special edition is caringly remastered and comes with a feature illustrating the before and after of the restoration process. A 50-minute documentary, "Anatomy of a Classic", hosted by Barry Norman, delves into the making of the film as well as trying to deal with some of the myths that surround it, like the (untrue) rumour that Welles ran over both time and budget.
